Baroque silent film apocalypse that takes on Charlie Chaplin’s “The Kid” and goes where Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis” looks the other way: to the lumpenproletariat, in the truest sense. The characters in 2551.01 (the numerical title is a quirk typical of Pfaffenbichler’s work) are creatures, apocalyptic overtakes of Tod Browning’s “Freaks.” They have fled from a violent despot into a convoluted sewer system. Everything is dirty, bare, cold, stripped, the people are wrapped in rags, their bodies are just falling to shreds. 2551.01 is flawless gore that relies on repulsion and puts the human mind on a wild ghost train ride, while the showmanship of the ugly and disgusting is nothing short of phenomenal.
