Through processing a year of bewildering news and images from my home in Hong Kong, I’ve come to question the significance of dear memories and personal joy in the face of things falling apart. As the days teeter toward an uncertain future, Happy Valley cinematically probes the role of the so-called “little things”. A rendering of the perseverance of spirit in Hong Kong − an attempt at irony that can’t help but be emotional. (Simon Liu)

Using the methods of filmmaking, I tried to trace my grandfather, the artist and glassmaker Bernhard Schagemann (* 1933, † 2016). The viscous state of hot glass, in which it is malleable, illustrates the temporal limitation imposed by the material, which also exists in (analog) film. In the titular sand casting technique, which Bernhard Schagemann preferred to use for sculptures, the negative form is lost when the casting is exposed. (Josef Graßl)

Josef Graßl b.1998 in Zwiesel, completed a bachelor’s degree at the Berlin Technical University of the Arts. In 2019 he participated in the restoration of G. J. Markopoulos’ “Eniaios”. During this time, he created his first 16mm works. He is currently studying restoration at the HTW Berlin with a focus on audiovisual media.

“The word ‘revolution’ to us Frenchmen is not a vague term. We know that revolution is a rupture, that revolution is an absolute. There is no such thing as a moderate revolution, there is no such thing as a planned revolution—as one speaks of a planned economy. The revolution we are announcing will overturn the entire existing order or it will not take place at all.” (Jean-Marie Straub mit Georges Bernanos)

The film bears witness to binational families and couples trying to cope with the UK’s hostile immigration environment. From multiple locations across the world, we hear personal accounts of how the interviewees navigate their way through the UK family immigration regulations, encountering prolonged periods of separation from their partners and families with distressing consequences.

A trace of regularly ordered mounds of earth. In the twilight a dump truck is being loaded. Dark earth is excavated, loaded and transported off the scenery. Without the mineral resources from the numerous diamond and gold mines in the so-called Russian Federation subject Yakutia, the Soviet Union would never have been able to exist until the 1990s.

Covid Messages is a video in six parts, based around broadcasts of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s COVID-19 press conferences. The work focusses on the British government’s attempts to eliminate the virus through the use of magic spells and rituals. While the pandemic spreads and the death toll rises, the Prime Minister makes repeated errors of judgement. Exasperated by his many mistakes, the spirits of the dead rise up and intervene.

Taking cinematic re-contextualization to the extreme without changing the original context, the film interweaves hundreds of frames and scenes from the late Soviet “women’s equality” propaganda – to create an elliptical, sensuous, quietly subversive world that does not map easily onto the contemporary notions and stakes of western feminism.
