The people that tell their story in this film are alcoholics. Beyond that they are lawyers, bureaucrats, home makers, managers, colleagues or mothers. "Portraits of German Alcoholics" explores the life stories and the survival strategies of people who are trying to arrange their daily lives around an addiction. The personal stories contrast, cross and unite with model-like imagery of settings reflecting a supposedly intact society: residential subdivisions, working environments in factories, etc. Leading beyond the personal histories, the interconnected voices in combination with the images convey a problem of society at large. The film opens a perspective on a reality lying behind assumed normalcy, a reality pervaded by unfulfillable yearnings. – Berlinale
