Om
1986 | 4 min | 16mm
Humorige Variation über den transzendenten Urklang.
"This is hardcore cinema." – Peter Kubelka

Gargantuan
1992 | 1 min | 16mm
"A voice-over intones the words ‘huge’ and ‘strapping’ as a lizard almost fills the screen, then ‘medium’ as the camera zooms out, then ‘tiny’, and finally ‘minute’, a pun on the film’s running time." (Fred Camper)

The Girl Chewing Gum
1976 | 12 min | 16mm
“Smith takes the piss out of mainstream auteurist ego, but provides proof of the underground ethos: Even with meagre mechanical means, the artist can command the universe.” (Ed Halter)

The Black Tower
1985–87 | 24 min | 16mm
“We enter the world of a man haunted by a tower which, he believes, is following him around London.” (Nik Houghton)

Blight
1994 –96 | 14 min | digital
BLIGHT was made in collaboration with the composer Jocelyn Pook. It revolves around the building of the M11 Link Road in East London, which provoked a long and bitter campaign by local residents to protect their homes from demolition.

unusual Red cardigan
2011 | 13 min | digital
The discovery of a VHS tape of the artist’s films on eBay triggers obsessive speculation about the seller’s identity.

JOHN SMITH – THE WORKING CLASS CAN KISS MY ASS
freitag 12 juni 2015 18.30 uhr filmmuseum münchen

Associations
1975 | 7 min | 16mm
By using the ambiguities inherent in the English language, ASSOCIATIONS sets language against itself. Image and word work together/against each other to destroy/create meaning.

Worst Case Scenario
2001–2003 | 8 min | digital
This videofilm starts out as a series of still photographs depicting daily life on a Viennese street corner. But as Sigmund Freud casts his long shadow across the city, the static world slowly and subtly comes to life and an increasingly improbable chain of events and relationships starts to emerge.

Throwing Stones (Hotel Diaries #3)
2004 | 11 min | digital
As the camera looks out through a barred window and the clock strikes four in a Swiss city, the death of Yasser Arafat provides the starting point for a journey back in time.

Pyramids / Skunk (Hotel Diaries #5/6)
2006–2007 17 min | digital
Auf dem Filmfestival von Rotterdam erhält John Smith die Anerkennung als ‚one of the most famous ex- perimental film makers in the world‘.
At the Rotterdam Film Festival in 2005, John Smith finally received the recognition he deserved: that of a world-famous experimental film maker. Filled with self-confidence, he decided on the spot to make a new masterpiece, armed only with a camera and a bar of chocolate.

Flag Mountain
2010 | 8 min | HD digital
A view across the border in Nicosia, the divided capital of Cyprus. The camera looks over the rooftops of the Greek Cypriot south to the mountains of the Turkish Republic in the north, where a display of nationalism is enhanced by filmic means. Moving between macro and micro perspectives, Flag Mountain sets dramatic spectacle against everyday life as the inhabitants of both sides of the city go about their daily business.

Dad’s Stick
2012 | 5 min | HD digital
‚The working class can kiss my ass‘, summt Tony Smith, Maler und Vater von John.
“DAD’S STICK features three well-used objects my father showed me shortly before he died. Two of these were so steeped in history that their original forms and functions were almost completely obscured. The third object seemed instantly recognisable, but turned out to be something else entirely.” (John Smith)
